About the Host

Mel Kiper Jr. & Todd McShay

Mel Kiper Jr. has served as expert analyst for ESPN’s annual NFL Draft coverage since 1984, providing in-depth scouting information on the nation’s most talented collegiate football players. His breadth of knowledge is unmatched and his pre-draft predictions are frequently the most accurate in the business, often as high as 80 percent correct in his first-round selections. Kiper makes frequent appearances on SportsCenter, NFL Insiders and NFL Live, co-hosts ESPN Radio’s Dari and Mel, and contributes to ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine. He and fellow analyst Todd McShay can also be heard on the First Draft podcast. Kiper is president of Kiper Enterprises, which he founded in 1981 while in college. His continuous, year-long research includes watching 20 to 25 college games each week. Observing so many games throughout the season provides Kiper with even more in-depth knowledge, in addition to what he gathers through lengthy discussions with coaches, players and team executives from around the National Football League and within the college ranks. Kiper’s likeness has also appeared in several video games including ESPN NFL 2K5, NFL Head Coach and Madden NFL 07-08. Kiper grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended Essex Community College. Todd McShay joined ESPN in 2006 as a college football and NFL Draft analyst, providing in-depth scouting information on college football players across the country, including the nation’s top NFL Draft prospects. McShay is a year-round contributor across ESPN’s multiple platforms, including SportsCenter, NFL Insiders, NFL Live, College Football Live, ESPN Radio, ESPN.com, and ESPN The Magazine. In 2014, McShay made his debut as a college football field analyst, and in 2016 worked with Steve Levy and Brian Griese on Saturday afternoon games. McShay is the director of college football scouting for ESPN’s Scouts Inc., and he has been part of ESPN’s coverage of the NFL Draft since 2006. In 2009, he joined ESPN’s commentator team for the NFL Draft telecast and then in 2011, he made his first appearance on ESPN’s main set at the site of the NFL Draft. In the years since, McShay continues to appear on ESPN’s main set for a majority of the event, while also providing analysis for SportsCenter and other shows. Prior to joining ESPN, McShay worked full-time for “The War Room” (1999-2006), a start-up scouting publication created by former NFL scout Gary Horton. It soon became a crosscheck for 16 NFL scouting departments and a go-to-source of information for CBS and The Sporting News. ESPN purchased the business in 2006 and changed the name to Scouts Inc. McShay interned for Horton in the summer of 1998, after serving as an undergraduate assistant for the University of Richmond coaching staff. Before becoming one of the nation’s top NFL Draft analysts, McShay was the quarterback for the Swampscott (Mass.) High School football team (1991-94) and served as a backup quarterback for the University of Richmond (1995-97) before sustaining a back injury that ended his college career. A native of Swampscott, Mass., McShay graduated from the University of Richmond in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in leadership studies (Jepson School of Leadership).
